Government and Co-op Federations

In 1996 the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada presented the Federal Minister responsible for CMHC with a proposal for an independent agency to administer Federal co-operative housing programs. The proposal gave government an option other than devolving these programs to the Provinces. Slowly the idea gained acceptance. In July 2004, the Agency for Co-operative Housing was incorporated as a co-operative, signing a service agreement with the Federal government in 2005. The Agency delivers client-centered service to co-ops in BC, Alberta, Ontario, and PEI. It takes a risk-based approach and makes use of up-to-date information technology to benefit both co-ops and the Federal government.

CHF Canada is the national umbrella organization for co-op housing and Canada's link with co-op housing around the world. CHF Canada exists to inspire, represent and serve its members in a united co-operative housing movement. Housing co-ops and other members look to CHF Canada of advice, education and support. CHF Canada actively defends the interest of its members by speaking up for co-ops and intervening with government on their behalf. Group buying programs, including insurance, bring even more value for CHF Canada membership.
